My love affair with paint...
"I dream my painting then I paint my dream..." Vincent Van Gogh
"I paint all the time. When I'm not painting, I'm thinking about painting. I have more ideas than there are hours in the day!
I create mainly abstract and semi abstract contemporary pieces and love the freedom and endless possibilities that this offers.
I enjoy using conventional brushstroke techniques, but also the challenge of finding less predictable ways to create the effect I want. I often paint in time to music. It's exhilarating to create a piece which is quite literally a direct transposition of sound into a visual entity.
I work mainly in soft body acrylics and inks on stretched canvas, with the addition of oil sticks to highlight and accentuate certain areas. I particularly love the energy of painting large scale canvases. Composition is mostly planned with meaningful and purposeful brush stokes. But sometimes I let it just randomly flow, letting the marks appear and do their own thing.
My painting inspiration comes from the beauty of the world around us: the vibrant colours of nature and the wonders of the universe. I love spending time near water; at the beach or by a river. I find the colours of beautiful sunsets and moody cloud formations totally mesmerising.
But in addition to physical and visual sources, my paintings will often reflect the emotions we feel and experience. Listening to music when painting always evokes thoughts and feelings and this will very often translate into my work.
I endeavour to connect with my audience by providing escapism, reducing stress and promoting feelings of well being. I want my art to make people 'feel': to resonate with it, evoking feelings of happiness, peace and tranquility, or to spark an energy to uplift, heal and inspire. I'm a firm believer of the positive impact art can have on the world and I want to reach out and share it with as many people as I can."
