PORTRAITS
I have a huge passion for portraiture. With over 9 years experience of taking commissions, I have completed hundreds of hand drawn portraits of people and pets.
My style focuses on realism. I strive to create pieces that are as true-to-life as my subject as possible, using traditional methods and adding some contemporary twists.
In addition to being commissioned, I love drawing wildlife, funny animals and celebrities. These can be found in my shop from time to time.
Portrait Commissions
I take commissions for people and pets (and occasionally an inanimate object!)
Portraits are done in pencil (graphite) or pastel (colour) using 300gsm heavyweight Bristol board or coloured pastel paper.
They are a truly wonderful way to capture the personality of your cherished ones, especially if done as a memorial to celebrate their passing.
A memory that will last a lifetime. As they say- "the gift that keeps on giving"!
Guidance for Photos
Portraits are generally of head and shoulders on a plain background, (unless otherwise commissioned), created from a digital reference photo supplied by the client via email or the order form below. I can work from separate photos for portraits with more than one subject if necessary.
They can be created in graphite (greyscale pencil) or pastel (colour).
It's really important that photos meet the following standards in order for me to draw sufficient detail for a good likeness:
Clear and sharp with no blurriness when you zoom in. A good example is being able to see individual hairs on a pet/ person
Well lit with no shadowing across the subject's face
No obstructions to hair/ face/ fur
The higher the definition of the photo, the more realistic the results will be as this will influence how much detail I can include. I can sometimes get a reasonable result from a poor quality image, but please bear in mind that this may result in a much less detailed portrait than some of the others I have done previously. I can only draw what I see!
It's best where possible to take a new photo using a decent phone camera.
Outside in natural light is best, or with them facing a window.
Fill the frame with their head and shoulders when taking the photo rather than cropping it later as this will result in reduced resolution.
